MacroTube gives YouTube on the big screen some style

There have been quite a few Windows 7 Media Center plugins that enable watching streaming video from services like Youtube. Most, however, cover the basics of getting the content to your screen but leave quite a bit to be desired in style and usability. MacroTube does both quite well allowing you to browse Youtube, DailyMotion and Microsoft’s Soapbox rather stylishly and even efficiently. This handy plugin from MCExtended of The Green Button forums definitely deserves a look from internet video aficionados.

Once the correct version of MacroTube for your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) has been installed launch the plugin from the extras menu of Windows Media Center. This first page gives you a few options to choose which video service you’d like to peruse or to set a few basic settings. Currently the only available settings are language, automatic updates and some (very) basic appearance options. Luckily the appearance of MacroTube requires little tampering to look very pleasing on your big screen.

After choosing which service you’d like to browse not only does MacroTube keep from overloading you with millions of videos in row after row or too few videos with uber-sized icons but you’ll also be given several options for narrowing your search. The plugin has the basic narrowing options including date, rating, views and relevance but also includes a fantastic search feature and categorical breakdown.

Searching the services is a snap, just select the Search button and enter in your query using the onscreen keyboard, Media Center remote or standard keyboard and go. The results are speedy and accurate taking only seconds to begin compiling a list of relevant video content. Once each page loads it can take a few moments to fully load the preview pane for video content which can be slightly disconcerting at times however.

MacroTube certainly goes a long way toward making streaming services look good on the Media Center. Each video will display the title, date, rating and short description of the content below in the standard Media Center fashion. In fact at no point does the plugin look entirely out of place in the standard Media Center setup, though the onscreen keyboard won’t match what you find in most Media Center screens.

Playing the videos was also extremely seem-less. Just as if changing the channel or starting a new movie from your collection the video goes right to full screen and begins playing along with all the fast forward, rewind and other manipulation options. MacroTube does streaming video so well on the Media Center it actually takes the medium from being a chore to being somewhat fun (from someone who isn’t that into online streaming videos).

Those who enjoy streaming services such as YouTube should definitely give MacroTube a try on their Media Center setup. You’ll likely find it easy to use and even better a convenient way to find the video you’re looking for to show all your friends. MacroTube made it easy to locate any video with it’s handy search feature saving the time of searching through scattered categorical systems for that one video.

Like having a stash of beautiful wallpaper images on your computer? Dream Desktop has several thousand to choose from, and their free Desktop Agent program makes it easy to download and enjoy your favorites.

Install the Agent and head to its configuration screen. There you can choose which images you want to display -- either random selections from those you mark as favorites in the search view (above, left) or anything Dream Desktop has tagged within the categories you choose -- or both!

You can also specify the interval between wallpaper changes, customize the maximum size of your local image cache (the default is 100MB), and enable or disable updates and notifications. Desktop Agent can also be set to launch when Windows starts up, and you can select which category you want to appear first when opening the main program window.

There are plenty of stunning images available, though I do have two small gripes. Resolution could be higher (scaling leads to some predictable graininess on my 1920x1080 display) and there's no support for dual-monitor configs. Still, I'd much rather see this on a customer's desktop than Webshots...

The slick, free program integrates weather information into your Windows 7 taskbar (or Superbar, depending on how geeky you are).

It looks like weatherbar's author took some of our commenter suggestions to heart in version 2 which is now available for download. What's new? You can now choose to display temperatures in either Celsius of Fahrenheit and specify an update interval in minutes. The main window has also been re-worked and current wind speed and direction is displayed with the current conditions.

There is one important UI bug at the moment (a fix is coming soon): when you pin the app to your taskbar, the weather icon doesn't update properly. Leave it unpinned and you'll get the correct display.

Create System Restore points in Windows 7 and Vista with two clicks

One thing I often forget to do before installing a program I want to test or fiddling with my drivers is creating a System Restore point. System Restore has been part of Windows for ages now, but I still have trouble remembering 1) it's there and 2) sometimes it's pretty handy.

To make it easier on myself, I set up a dead-simple restore point creator. Those of you who don't want to bother with the DIY route can download Quick Restore Maker from The Windows Club. Download the app, double click the icon, and you've got yourself a fresh restore point!

The manual method isn't all that complicated. All it takes is creating a new text file, changing the extension to .vbs and pasting the following code in via notepad (or your favorite text editor):

Vanity Remover quickly finds and removes empty folders

One of my resolutions this year was to stick to a regular system maintenance plan. I've got CCleaner set up to purge garbage files and prune my registry, Security Essentials doing nightly scans for malware, and the Windows 7 backup utility saving my important files to an external hard drive.

A handy little tool I'm adding to my routine is Vanity Remover. It's a small, portable tool designed to find and remove empty folders on your hard drive.

Click the folder icon to choose a starting point, press the green arrow to start, and Vanity Remover recursively scans for and removes content-free directories.

Getting rid of pointless folders is one thing I'm almost always too lazy to do, but I think I can handle running this app once every fortnight...

Boot Snooze combines the goodness of hibernation and rebooting

You want to shut down your Windows PC for the day, but you also want it to start as quickly as possible tomorrow morning. Waiting 3-4 minutes to load Windows plus all of the apps that you run at startup just isn't a (good) option. What do you do? You probably just put your computer into sleep or hibernation mode. But there's a better way.

When you constantly use sleep or hibernate, there's a good chance your computer could go days, weeks, or months without a reboot. And while that's not the end of the world, Windows generally works best when you do a reboot every now and again. Data gets cleared from cache files, Windows updates are applied, and programs and services that may have become stuck somewhere between the running and not-running state will be stopped and/or restarted.

Boot Snooze is a simple freeware app that combines the best aspects of a complete reboot with the speedy recovery of sleep or hibernate. Basically all you have to do is fire up this executable file and click the "restart then hibernate" or "restart then standby" option. Your computer will shut down, start up again, and then go into standby or hibernate mode so that when you're ready to start using your computer again you won't have to perform a cold boot.

The program presents you with a 10 minute countdown upon rebooting before hibernating. This allows you to change your mind if you need to. But you can also just start the app and walk away. When you come back your computer should be suspended.

It would be nice if Boot Snooze would let you adjust the amount of time shown on the countdown clock. 10 minutes might be overkill. But overall it's a handy little app, and it's hard to argue with the price. It's available as a free download from the Donation Coder forums.

Toshiba Stops Incandescent Bulb Production

Yesterday, Toshiba ended its manufacture of mass-market incandescent light bulbs–bulbs that use a ton of energy, burn out quickly and pale in comparison in terms of energy efficiency to CFLs and LEDs. The move ends the company’s 120-year history of incandescent bulb production. The decision signals that the lighting industry is poised to become significantly greener.

Toshiba initially planned to halt production of incandescent next year, but decided to push the date up. The company now aims to focus on creating LED lights, which are significantly more energy efficient than incandescent. Incandescent have drawn criticism from environmentalists in recent years because most of the power they consume is released as heat, so they need to use a ton of energy to produce light. Plus, the bulbs burn out quickly when compared to CFLs and LEDs.

The death of incandescent is proof that consumer choices and sound legislation can quickly and effectively improve the state of the environment. Australia started regulating the sale of incandescent bulbs last year, and countries like the EU and US are poised to implement regulations over the next few years. Now if only the world could adopt legislation to limit carbon emissions…

Solar Powered Augmented Contact Lenses Cover Your Eye with 100s of LEDs

Want eyesight that would make the Terminator jealous? Well, in a few years, you might be able to say hasta la vista to your normal old contact lenses and hello to the solar powered augmented lenses that University of Washington professor Babak Amir Parviz and his students are working on. The technology would embed hundreds of semitransparent LEDs onto a thin lens, letting wearers experience augmented reality right through their eyes. And the applications – from health monitoring to just plain bionic sight – could be endless.

The lens that Parviz has been working on utilizes sensors and wireless technology and is still in its nascent stages but is definitely promising. Of his research, Parviz says, “These lenses don’t need to be very complex to be useful. Even a lens with a single pixel could aid people with impaired hearing or be incorporated as an indicator into computer games. With more colors and resolution, the repertoire could be expanded to include displaying text, translating speech into captions in real time, or offering visual cues from a navigation system. With basic image processing and Internet access, a contact-lens display could unlock whole new worlds of visual information, unfettered by the constraints of a physical display.”

All of this begs the question, as we move towards using less and less material to make our products, will we also move towards using more of our own body parts?

Bring Email to the Big Screen with Media Center Mail

Looking for a way to bring your GMail to your 10-foot interface? We may have just the thing for you. If you’ve been looking for a way to separate yourself from your desktop but can’t live without immediate access to your email it might be time to give Media Center Mail a try.

Officially known as Vista Media Center Mail, a recent update has made this useful little Media Center plugin Windows 7 compatible. Created by and available for download from OABSoftware getting started with the plugin is a snap.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the plugin you’ll need to open up the configuration software from the programs menu. The first thing you’ll need to do is setup the basic configuration. Tell the program how often you’d like it to check for new mail and what sound, if any, you’d like played when new mail arrives.

New create your first user by pressing the Add new user () icon in the toolbar. Select the user’s name in the tree on the left to assign a display name and optional picture to be used if you have multiple users. On single user setups you will enter directly into the mailbox area, while multiple user setups will be able to choose from a list of users inside Media Center.

Next setup the mail accounts for each user by selecting the user and pressing the Add new mail account ( ) icon. For Gmail accounts, use pop.gmail.com, port 995, and enable SSL. Then enter your username and password. When you press the Apply button the program will double check that you are able to login to the server correctly.

For other accounts, check with your service provider for pop3 server information.

Now just open up Windows 7 Media Center and go into the Extra Programs. You should see an icon for Media Center Mail which will allow you access to the plugin. Once inside, choose the user you’d like to read mail for and you’ll be given a list of emails, sorted by date.

It’s worth noting that Media Center Mail doesn’t check for new mail immediately after starting Media Center and instead it appears to wait the default time set in the configuration before checking.

Also, it appears that Google doesn’t appreciate that the plugin attempts to download all emails since the beginning of the account and appears to put the brakes on the retrieval. This could also be a limitation put in place by the plugin developer, either way it make take some time to catch up with older accounts.

Selecting an unread email will take you to a simple reader window. The reader doesn’t support much beyond the basics however. You will be able to read the email as plain text, no images or urls, with no ability to reply or do much other than mark it as read or delete the message.

For this you should have:-

A pc/laptop.
winrar.
jar file of applications you want to change the Icons.
Images from which you want to make personalized Icons.
An Image editing software like photoshop or any other you prefer.

let me start with the most commonly used application opera mini.

First you have to get a jar file file of opera mini on you pc/laptop (download it from here). After you download it right click on the jar file and open it with winrar. This is how its gonna look

You can see here only one image file "i.png". The default Opera Mini icon is shown in the image below.

Now what you have to do is open the image and have a look at its properties. here the default opera mini icon is a png file of 15x15 pixels with the name " i ". So now we have to convert our image(the one we want to make our default icon) to the size of 15x15 pixels and convert it to a png file this you can easily do with the help of photoshop. After you convert it to a 15x15 pixels png file save it with the name " i " ( write it in a lower case ). Now you are done with the most of the things. Now once again open opera mini.jar file with winrar drag your "i.png" file to winrar and replace the existing file and you are done. now transfer the file to your phone. Now go to applications menu and have a look at your personalized icon.

Things to Remember:

Name of the new icon file should be the same as of the default icon other wise this won't work.
Always use the same case while naming the file.
You can change the size of image file but not more than 200%. Other wise it can give you errors.
You can apply same tutorial to change any image file you can see when you open it with the winrar.
